LYLE LOVETT’S CAREER can be divided into three acts. Act I is set in Nashville, where he distinguished himself as a songwriter whose wit was too dry for Music Row and whose hair kept him from being written off as just another hat act. Based on the crossover success he achieved with his early albums, Lovett moved west to Hollywood, took up acting (well, not so much acting as just appearing in movies), married Julia Roberts, and achieved a level of success rare for country/not-country artists. After his divorce, he wandered back to his home state of Texas, where he continues to make music that is, like that of so many Lone Star artists, largely uncategorizable.
